Before comparing quotes

What ocean freight includes.

The vessel’s price is only one part. These are the items included in a quote and those often left out.

PRACTICAL GUIDE · UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Freight is more than the vessel.

Two very different prices may cover different services. To compare them, separate each item:

01

Base freight

Port-to-port transport. It depends on the route, container type or cargo volume, and season.

02

Shipping line surcharges

Fuel, peak season, security and other adjustments. They change frequently and may be quoted separately from base freight.

03

Origin charges

Factory collection, handling at the origin terminal and export documentation. Depending on the Incoterm, these are paid by your supplier or by you.

04

Destination charges

Terminal handling, release of the transport document and, for consolidated cargo, deconsolidation at the warehouse. These are the items most often overlooked when comparing quotes.

05

Cargo insurance

Covers damage or loss during transit. Freight and insurance also form part of the value used to calculate import taxes.

06

Inland transport

Transport from the port or warehouse to your premises. It is rarely included in international freight.

07

Coordination

Fees for organizing transport, tracking the cargo and coordinating with customs and the warehouse.

Full container or consolidated cargo

How charges depend on your cargo.

FCL

Full container load

You pay for the entire container, whether you fill it or not. It makes sense when the volume justifies it, and your goods travel alone from origin to destination.

LCL

Less than container load

You pay for the space your goods occupy, by volume or weight, whichever is greater. They travel with other importers’ cargo, with additional warehouse consolidation and deconsolidation charges.

A common mistake: comparing freight alone. For consolidated cargo, destination charges can be as significant as the freight itself.

The Incoterm

Who pays for each stage.

The sale terms agreed with your supplier determine which transport costs are already included in the price and which you must arrange yourself:

EXW

Ex Works

The supplier only makes the goods available. You are responsible for collection, origin charges, freight and all other costs.

FOB

Free On Board

The supplier delivers the goods on board at the origin port. From there, freight and insurance are your responsibility. This is the most common arrangement for controlling transport.

CIF

Cost, Insurance and Freight

The supplier arranges freight and insurance to the destination port. It may seem simpler, but you do not control who transports the cargo, and destination charges may be higher than expected.

Before accepting a quote

Have quotes to compare?

We review what each includes, what is left out and which suits your cargo.

For comparison

What to ask about each quote.

01

Are surcharges included?

Ask for separate itemization and whether they are fixed or may change before shipment.

02

Are destination charges included?

Terminal handling, release of the transport document, storage and deconsolidation.

03

How many free container days are included?

After that period, the shipping line charges for each day the container is not returned.

04

How long is it valid?

Freight rates change often: an expired quote may no longer be honored.

05

What is the transit time?

A cheaper route may have more stops and arrive later.

Frequently asked questions

What we are
asked most.

Common questions about ocean transport costs.

Why do freight rates change so much?

They depend on supply and demand for vessel space, fuel, season and route. That is why quotes have short validity periods.

Should the supplier quote the freight?

It can be convenient, but buying FOB and arranging transport yourself gives you more control over timing, the shipping line and destination charges.

Is freight subject to tax?

Freight and insurance form part of the customs value, the basis for calculating import taxes. An inaccurate freight quote therefore also affects the tax cost.

Ocean or air freight?

Ocean freight is more economical for medium and large volumes but takes longer. Air freight suits small, urgent or high-value cargo.
